Published! take a peek at this month’s ProPhotoWest magazine!

It was so exciting to open up my mailbox and find the latest issue of ProPhotoWest with my photo of Alex featured! That gorgeous photo on the cover is by Ken Sklute. It was so absolutely stunning in person – I can’t believe I beat him out (just barely!) for Best in Show. Steve & Peggy Roosa, the editors of ProPhotoWest just won a big national award honoring it as the best state magazine – too cool! You can read about their award on their BLOG!

my adorable little cousin (well, second cousin, but who’s keeping track??)

My cousin Geoffrey and I are horrible – we have both been living in So cal and haven’t taken the time to see one another – it’s shamful, really. well – I had to head down to San Clemente to shoot some of my favorite clients – and it turns out he lives on the VERY NEXT street! So, no excuses, I had to go meet his adorable new baby (and stunningly beautiful wife – who would NOT let me photograph her!) Here are just a few….Geoffrey – it was so great to touch base with you again – can’t wait to see you next month!! Hope you like these…

She is pretty darned cute, isn’t she???

*sparkly eyes* – the importance of light….

I get a lot of emails from other photographers asing questions and I **try** to reply as best I can, but sometimes it gets overwhelming! So, I thought I’d add a segment to my blog on FAQs – if you have something you want to know, just shoot me an email or ask your question in the *comments* section.

One of the more common questions is “how do you get the EYES so sparkly or bright?” I wanted to really SHOW that it is the LIGHT that is the MOST IMPORTANT element in making a great *sparkly-eyed* photograph! There are a lot of peeps out there who are really going photoshop-crazy **working** the eyes – I just wanted to add a gentle reminder that if you LOOK at where the light is falling when you TAKE the photo, life will be better….(at least your photos will be better!)

Here is an example of my little friend Lily. WE took these top two photos just one second apart. I saw that the light wasn’t hitting her right eye the way I wanted it to, and asked her to just turn her face slightly towards the window. Tada! Perfect light in both eyes! (NOTE : this is MUCH easier with a cooperative 7 year old then a cranky toddler – I know, i know!)

….and if I am showcasing *toothless grins* today…then this shot of Jake is for my Mom!

“tortured by photography!” – my Easter post….

Most photographers search forever for that one perfect *tagline* – you know, you’ve all heard them…*capturing your special moments for a lifetime* (blech!)…*let your family be your art* (yuk!)…*mystical magical moments* (okay- you get the idea!)

Well- a little creative genuis at my home came up with a great one for me this Easter…invented by my little monster Jake! (in all fairness – i told them they couldn’t dive into their CANDY until they had their photos taken!!) Soooooo…my helpful child thought he’d speed up the process (and get to dive into the chocolate!) by hollering “Come on over here and get ***tortured by photography***:! It became a huge rallying cry – soon ALL the kids were yelling it..

I can’t wait to get new business cards printed up – I think it will be a huge hit – don’t you???

color, color and more color – Lily turns 4!! ~Los Angeles kids photographer Jennifer Wilson~

One of my favorite little client/friends just turned 4 and her birthday bash was an incredible event! (as always…) When Tara (her mom) asked me to photograph it – I hated to tell her that I was on still hobbling around on crutches….there was just no way I could do a *real* session….so….I did the next best thing…Ali and I went as guests!! Tara & Marc always throw the BEST parties so I knew it would fun to go without the pressure to have to *get the shot*! Of course, being the camera-geek that I am – I had to limp around and shoot a little anyway – there was way too much photographic *eye candy* to let the moment pass me by….

Lily’s party had a *Mary Poppins* theme – she had seen this Mary Poppins party on my blog and she hired the amazing Donna Collins at Party Wishes. Donna always does such an incredible job! She is a party-planning goddess :)

I was BLOWN AWAY by the food at this party – it was catered by Bite Catering Couture and it was just crazy-good! AS the name suggests – each item was *bite-sized* – and they were all incredibly delicious – from the elegant little individual crudite (served in shot glasses with ranch dressing at the bottom)….to the yummy mini-burgers (blue cheese and carmelized onion)…to the most adorable little chocolate shakes….just thinking about it again makes my mouth water! If you are in the Los Angeles area and are planning a party – check them out!

(oh – and you know those *hints* I’ve been alluding to in posts like this? well…we’ll find out what i was planning……right after the break! (said in my best Ryan Seacrest/American Idol drawing out the suspense voice) …soon…….very soon….

Children’s Photographer of the Year! woohoo! (and Best of Show!!) California Child Photographer Jennifer Wilson

wow. just wow. i was SO honored this past week to be a part of the state convention in pasadena – and SO SO SO excited to have received such amazing awards! I was very fortunate this year to have one of my photographs chosen for THREE different awards! I was awarded (insert drum roll here…)

*Best of Show* (ummmm- YAY!)

*Kodak Gallery Award* (given to only 5 prints in the entire state – AND I will be eligible to win a Kodak Gallery Elite award in Nashville at the national convention!!!)

and lastly

*Children’s Photographer of the Year*!!! (for the second time – I won in 2006 also!) It was fun to have my husband and children there – and even more amazing to have Alex’s (my award-winning subject!) family there. Her mom told me that while they were walking around the print exhibit, people kept recognizing Alex and coming up to her telling her how beautiful she is -she felt like a movie star!! Isn’t that the BEST? That makes my heart happy :) Awards and recognition are great, but hearing that story??? THAT is why I am a photographer….

…and of course, being a photographer, one would ASSUME I would have a CAMERA at the convention!?!? well…. you would be wrong :) i had to make do with the iPhone to take this first shot of my photo hanging!! many thanks to Art Suwansang of Wedding 64 in Santa Barbara for the photo of me with my kiddos! (Jake loved holding the crystal Kodak Gallery award because he said it looks like a “Star Wars trophy”!)

One last thing…

The convention festivities were made a little more challenging by the fact that I am still hobbling around on crutches! I am ALMOST ready to go back to work – I can’t wait to start shooting again! I have been putting my *down time* to good use, though…so STAY TUNED for some exciting WORKSHOP announcements in the near future!!

laid up! {{out of commission}} Las Vegas baby photographer Jennifer Wilson

boo hiss on me…..i’ve been neglecting the BLOG again…

The last month has been a bit crazy with my super duper yearly pilgrimage to Las Vegas to attend WPPI – 4 fun-filled days of non-stop photography adventures! BUT, the fun ended as soon as I returned home…..because I BROKE MY FOOT! (It is hard to chase those energetic little ones on crutches!) To add to my joy (haha) I will have surgery on my hand this coming Monday, needless to say I am out of commission for awhile..

{if you are feeling really sorry for me, I am happy to accept well-wishes and girl scout thin mint cookies!} haha – on second thought – i’d better steer clear of those evil girl scouts since i am spending far too much time on my couch!

March was already booked up, so I am shuffling those people into April, so if you were thinking of booking a session this spring – call quickly! I might try a day of mini-sessions at the beach when I can walk again to squeeze everyone in – I feel awful turning folks away…. so I will find a way to make it happen!

Blah blah blah – you are sick of listening to me – how ’bout I show some photos instead?

Meet Tyler! He is a little guy I met for the first time in Vegas this year – hopefully I will be seeing him again soon! This first one I love SOOOO much – I want a huge canvas of it for MY wall!

magic moments…. |california children’s photographer jennifer wilson

sometimes….when you are a mom….you come across *magic moments*…and you say to yourself “this is a moment i will want to remember ALWAYS*…and sometimes….if you are lucky….there will be a camera nearby…

this is my baby. she drives me insane. she will pay me back for every rotten thing i ever did as a teenager. but…she makes my heart burst with love sometimes…just look at the light shining on her little curls…this is what its all about…

….but i digress…

here she is, *reading* in the window light (seriously – don’t you just love her little toes pressed up against the window?) yes – i **REALLY** wanted to fix her headband, but she was so blissfully unaware of me…completely absorbed…i didn’t want to ruin the *moment*….

the book she is *reading* (which, in Ali-land means making up her own story for each page) is called “who are you going to be today, olive?” it is ali’s very favorite story, about an adorable bird on a little journey of self-discovery. it is by my friend marisa haedike, the fabulous artist/blogger/genius at Creative Thursday. You can buy Olive’s story at Marisa’s Etsy store. Be warned – Marisa’s blog is addictive!

I won! I won! (**very** good day at the Professional Photographers of California print competition!)

I won!!!!

So, what did I win, you ask? (do you think it is weird that i always fill in *your* part of the conversation?)

I won (insert drum roll here please……..)

Children’s Photographer of the Year 2009!!!

This is my second time in four years to win this title!! I can’t believe it – I was *thisclose* to not even entering – I got a ticket on the drive down, my kids were monsters and I *almost* blew it off….WHEW…I am so glad I didn’t! I watched the competition judging all day and was on pins and needles until the end – they have changed the rules this year and they bring out the 5 highest scoring prints in each category….so we had to wait until the bitter end to find out the winners….

In the end, it came down to my print and the print of my good friend the lovely Amy Fink. I would have been excited for her if she had won (but bummed for me!) and I know she felt the same way……but the judges deliberated and deliberated and then decided to award TWO titles this year! It couldn’t have turned out better! WE were so excited for each other :) The awards will be handed out at the state convention in Pasadena on March 22nd….and I just *might* have more exciting news to share then also…..

Meanwhile – please meet the stunningly beautiful Miss Alex….the *instant* I took this photo I turned to her mom and said “i think that might be the most gorgeous photo I have ever taken”…..so nice to have others agree with me! Her eyes are just so amazingly beautiful – if *eyes are the windows to the soul* then she surely has one fantastic soul! Alex has alopecia – a condition where you lose your hair – but doesn’t she have the cutest head ever??!!

alex2.jpg

Alex’s photo scored an 87! In PPA competitions, anything over an 80 is considered *worthy of a merit* – i had two other photos that also merited – both scored an 81, and both happen to be my own children, so that was kind of cool! (i am displaying these images digitally here – but *in real life* they were all matted with fine art mattes and looked lovely – the mattes really added to the presentation, so you’ll have to use your imagination a little bit!)

You’ve probably seen this one before, but if not, here is Jake….
